El Rocho's on Circular Road in Singapore
When I first read about this place (in 8 Days, I think?), I wasn't sure what to make of it. They said that it was helmed by a CIA grad, and yet the photos showed tacos with some kind of creamy sauce drizzled onto it via a squeeze bottle. And when I finally saw the menu today, I was even more concerned, as it even mentioned the use of lettuce and mayo on the tacos. But I needed to get back to the office after running an errand nearby, and thus made this my lunch selection (36 Circular Road, 6438-7879).
The thing that surprised me was how good the tortillas were. Granted, he single-plied it, but they were just the grainy corny things that I would expect of them. He even had a tripe soup today that surprisingly featured hominy inside, even if the bowl was small and lacking tortillas to go with it.
So yes, that was better than I thought it would be. But the purist in me would much rather go to Lucha Loco, where the menu features things like micheladas and huitlacoche, not Tex-Mex items like burritos and nachos. Then again, I suppose that the tripe and hominy soup *was* menudo, eh?
