26 Carrot Cake at Toa Payoh West Market

Yuan Yang Carrot Cake

Chey Sua at Toa Payoh West Market may get a lot of attention for its long wait time and Michelin listing, but it turns out that there's another carrot cake place just a few stalls down that likewise is rather well-praised (127 Lorong 1 Toa Payoh #02-26). Fortunately, the wait wasn't too long on a weekday, so I grabbed a yuan yang mixed plate to try. The white one was surprisingly spicy, and the black one was delicately earthy, but neither one did it for me, as they were both rather mushy.

The dad used to cook and his version was not mushy and had good charred. Unfortunately the old taste is gone.
