We were in Toa Payoh this morning and figured that it'd be a good time to try Hokkien Man's Hokkien mee (19 Lorong 7 Toa Payoh #01-264, 8791-1585)). It's run by a former Les Amis chef who takes pre-orders by WhatsApp given the long lines that the place commands. And yes, it was pretty good, featuring fresh seafood as well as a decently thick gravy coating the noodles (not to mention a subtle chili sauce that they charge for if you want more). Now, in my mind, this is still short of Yi Sheng, but if we come back, we'll order a larger plate.
Just a couple of stalls down from him was a stall called Tanjong Rhu Wanton Noodle that looked pretty good. So we gave them a try too, and the best part was the noodles themselves, as they were firm and skinny, while the fried wantons were light and crispy. The chili sauce was a little sweet, but it was all still tasty enough that I gobbled it down without hesitation. This "Original Since 1986" chain, by the way, seems to be different from the "Min Kee Tanjong Rhu Wanton Noodle" stall in the adjacent Kim Keat Palm Market.
Speaking of the adjacent market, this Sims Place Chwee Kueh stall looked promising (22 Lorong 7 Toa Payoh #01-55), so we grabbed a small four piece sample. We didn't like it though, as the topping was sweet, and more surprisingly, the rice cakes were almost too smooth and soft. I liked the chili sauce at least, as it was punchy and clean (i.e., not sweet nor masked by other things).
