A spicy ramen shop from Japan has opened an outlet in the newly refurbished basement of VivoCity (1 HarbourFront Walk #B2-36, 6592-2616). I was excited about trying it, especially since they had a cilantro-loaded option like the one above. But I was also a bit apprehensive given that the bowls featured a big cube of braised pork belly, which looked like it was going to be sweet in a very old school kind of way.
After finally trying it, the pork indeed turned out to be sweet. Worse, the broth was disappointingly crude, with the taste of the miso being so dominant that it was difficult to make anything else out, including the extra cilantro that I opted for. I'm not sure if this karashibi style mandates the use of miso, but I was hoping for something more refined like what Bingiri does. And I didn't like the wavy noodles either. The only thing I liked in this bowl were the crunchy beansprouts and baby corn.
If I do find myself here again, I'll load up on those and also crank up the chili pepper and sansho up a notch or two. Interestingly, it looks like the local operator is also behind NEXT SHIKAKU and even that Kamakura curry bread place Giraffa, the latter of which had another outlet nearby (the bread had crunchy sprinkles on it and a comforting curry inside, but I don't need to get it again).
