The way that sushi has been butchered in the US with things like cream cheese, spicy mayo, and deep frying is not exactly a turn on. But I figured that I might as well embrace it given that our choice of lunch venue today was out of my hands. In the process, I realized that there is a sushi roll that is local to the San Francisco Bay Area: the 49er roll.
Now, you may note that it's "49er roll" rather than "49ers roll," as this was not developed with the NFL team in mind...at least, from what I could figure out online. But not surprisingly, many shops around here call it the "49ers roll" instead, and one can't help but notice that the colors are pretty darned similar to the team's.
It's basically just a California roll (yep, crab meat and avocado) wrapped on the outside with salmon with slied lemon. Fortunately, this suburban shop was kind enough to use real crab meat while keeping the lemon slice extra thin. Actually, if this were really meant as a tribute to the NFL team, then they could have wrapped it with a red-colored maguro tuna rather than pink-colored salmon.
