Chen’s Kitchen at Paragon in Singapore

String beans with mushrooms

I've always found it interesting that Chen Kentaro swung all the way to the other end of the spectrum by making Chen's Mapo Tofu so cafeteria-like compared to his posh Shisen Hanten. Well, now he has finally launched something that lies in between them. It's still casual, but this at Paragon Shopping Centre, so it's a bit more upscale in line with its surroundings (290 Orchard Road #B1-43).

The mapo tofu is still the same thick and salty (in a good way) concoction that we've always known. But this shop also offers a white seafood version, a green vegetarian version, and a black wagyu version. We stuck to the classic red one given that it was cheapest and also dependable.

I wasn't too big a fan of the other items though, particularly in that the ganbian sijidou sadly had no chili peppers in it. They were doing an opening promo for free chahan with sakura ebi, which was fine on its own but had too much going on when eaten with the mapo tofu. Well, one thing that I'd like to try next time is their wagyu with green chili peppers. I hope they procure some proper rice bowls to eat from too.
