Tekong Island Fish Soup at Takashimaya Food Village
There have been a lot of changes at the Takashimaya Food Village (392 Orchard Road B2); many stalls like Yoshinoya, Pepper Lunch, Pho Hoa, and Tai Cheong are all gone. The only thing that seemed half-interesting today was this stall from a guy who grew up out in Pulau Tekong.
In comparison to the usual fish soup that one gets, this one was clearly different, including not just those strips of egg on the side, but also the turmeric batter on the fish and a slightly earthier broth that was apparently created via dried shrimp.
The turmeric was a fun touch, but the texture of the fish was a bit tough, and I wish that they didn't put iceberg lettuce in here either. I also prefer the more purist version of a crisp fish-based broth. I'm not exactly yearning to go back as a result, but it was interesting to try this variant at least.
