China's Xiao Noodles Has Opened in Singapore

Chongqing Mala Noodles

Yujian Xiaomian, or Xiao Noodles (not to be confused with Xiaohun Spicy Noodle), is a big chain in China that has opened an outlet on the former grounds of GO Noodle House at 313@Somerset (313 Orchard Road #B3-37, 6298-4256). It specializes in Chongqing noodles, and they have a number of other bowls, including maocai as well as non-spicy options too, plus some small snacks.

While I haven't eaten at an outlet in China, I'm pretty sure that they didn't water down the food for the local palate here, as most things were pretty potent. It all went well with their coconut milk, which helped to offset all of the salt and grease. That said, the food admittedly wasn't that different from the packaged stuff that one can get at markets like Scarlett except that it's served hot from a kitchen using some fresh ingredients.

The more notable thing was the shockingly low prices. Most bowls stayed in single-digit territory, with snacks just a couple of bucks at that. Plus, the food is served quickly and in a nicely-designed venue featuring porcelainware, drawers of utensils, and a condiment bar with pickles. I guess it's a bit like McDonald's in that it delivers affordable food with mass appeal in an efficient and comfortable setting.
