China's Xiao Noodles Has Opened in Singapore

Chongqing Mala Noodles

Yujian Xiaomian, or Xiao Noodles, is a big chain in China that has opened its first overseas outlet on the former grounds of GO Noodle House at 313@Somerset (313 Orchard Road #B3-37, 6298-4256). It specializes in Chongqing noodles, and they have a number of other bowls, including maocai as well as non-spicy options, plus some small snacks.

The food was fine, but the more notable thing was the shockingly low prices. Most bowls stayed in single-digit territory, with snacks just a couple of bucks at that. And while I haven't eaten at one in China before, I'm pretty sure that they didn't water down the food for the local palate, as most things were pretty potent. It all went well with their coconut milk, which was also very cheap and helped to offset all of the salt and grease.

That said, the food admittedly wasn't that different from the packaged stuff that one can get at markets like Scarlett: it wasn't anything high-end, but was authentic and did the job. Plus, one gets the food served hot and quickly here with proper seating. I guess it's a bit like a McDonald's of China; the food is totally different of course, but one basically gets consistent food delivered with operational efficiency in a comfortable setting
