Gio Cha Duc Huong Sandwiches in San Jose

Large #2

This small chain came up in conversation this morning, so we picked up a couple of bánh mì on our way back. I'm making it sound easier than it was though: "picking up" took nearly 30 minutes, as there was a huuuge crowd in front of the store with people waiting to pick up their orders (and it was well past the lunch hour on a Saturday BTW). Now, most of them were carrying bags of at least 5-10 sandwiches, so I guess these bulk orders were slowing down the flow. Either way, I was curious to know why it was in such high demand.

It turns out that these were pretty sizeable portions. Fortunately, the bread was nicely textured with a mild touch of sweetness. They were pretty generous with the thick cuts of meat inside too. It was in fact a bit too generous for me; I would have prefered thinner meat with more cilantro and chili peppers. So I'd rather go to Lee's instead of waiting ages here. But if I am ordering from here again, I'll get the grilled pork, and in a small size, which was an option that I only noticed afterwards.
