Last time we passed through Yokohama, we only realized afterwards that there were several very popular tonkatsu shops within a few minutes walk of each other, with this one having been open for almost 100 years (5 Chome-58-2 Tokiwacho, 045-681-4411). We got there early this morning given that there were huge lines in front of it last time.
I can see why too, as the food was on point. They had the usual hire and rosu sets with free refills of shredded cabbage, but they also had some limited quantity options, including that aged loin above, which was even more tender and light than the standard-issue pork.
They didn't even need to elevate the pieces onto the usual metal wire stands, and yet the breading stayed light and crispy. We gobbled these up in no time, along with those fried shiitake mushrooms behind it. I particularly liked that their salad dressing was an earthy onion gravy-like one rather than that commercialized sesame stuff that many big chains provide.
