The lines at
Yangguofu are much more manageable now, so I finally went in today to try their
malaban option. To my surprise, they put the sauce on the side. You were supposed to mix it into your bowl of blanched items yourself, but I used it as a dip instead, as that made it a bit easier to regulate the sodium and spices (it was much better than
Jiuzhemeban). The other nice thing was that my total was much cheaper today (literally half of what I paid last time), although that's presumably also because I took it easy when selecting my ingredients.
