The Gyu-Don from Sugimoto Bonta, Singapore
Sugimoto puts its aburi bowls front and center on its menu. But down in the corner are a number of gyu-don options as well. I just wanted the answer to one question: how did it compare to Yoshinoya? It was definitely less sweet. Normally, I would say that is a good thing, especially since the meat was still tender and fatty enough to make it naturally tasty. And yet, Yoshinoya was more satisfying given how much flavor it packs.
Side note: if you get the basic gyu-don with a soft boiled egg on the side, it's a dollar cheaper than getting the pre-packaged gyu-don with egg set, even if they are effectively the same thing. When I asked the staff why that was the case, they claimed that the latter comes with more beef. But it's not very obvious in those little bowls, and it makes you wonder if that was just a convenient excuse.
