FRANCIS Restaurant in Wan Chai, Hong Kong
This didn't sound like an Israeli restaurant; presumably it was named after its street address instead (4 Saint Francis Street, +852-3101-9521). But it looked like my kind of place when we walked in: a cozy counter with plenty of booze and small plates. That burnt eggplant above was the best of it all, being nice and smoky, while the pita came out nice and hot.
But the purist in me wasn't as big of a fan of the other things that we ordered, like the baked halloumi as well as the stuffed baby squid, both of which were fine but whose natural taste was covered up by the heavy seasoning. Their cauliflower wasn't as creamy as the masterpieces from Miznon and Safta either. I won't complain if anyone wants to come back, but it won't be my first choice.
