Shang Palace at the Shangri-La Hotel in Chengdu

Red Oil Wontons

It looks like the Shangri-La folks have a Shang Palace restaurant in most of its hotel locations. And many of them have garnered awards, like a Michelin star for the one in Paris. This one in Chengdu (9 Binjiang Dong Road, +862284097888) has recognitions from some publications as well. It's too bad then that most of the Sichuan food, like the dumplings above, weren't very spicy (neither was the laziji nor shuizhuniu). The non-spicy items were much more interesting to me, like some kind of a steamed shrimp and bamboo dumpling, as well as a goose liver shengjianbao on a bed of leeks.

Best places to eat dinner in Chengdu are the Fly Restaurants. Try Laocaipu, Qingyang, Changfa St, 48号附1.

Also try knife blade noodles w/ cowpeas at 廖老幺杂酱面 Liào lǎo yāo zá jiàng miàn,金鹏街12号 Jīnpéng jiē 12 hào. Bit of a taxi ride but very well worth it.

Single favorite dish in Chengdu is Sweetwater Noodles at ShangXin Longfen 伤心凉粉 at 龙泉驿区洛带镇上街广东会馆内.

Enjoy.
