Tek Sen Restaurant in George Town, Penang
That was some of the best food I've ever eaten in Penang (18 Lebuh Carnarvon, +60-12-981-5117). Everything that we ordered was delicious, including not just the tofu above, but also an assam pomfret as well as a char siew reminiscent of Meng Kee's yet diced and made spicy. My favorites were a salt and pepper squid as well as their kang kong, which was done with some fresh shrimp and yet without the sambal overpowering the dish.
And it's exactly that approach to the food that I liked so much about this place: they took fresh ingredients and cooked it up in a punchy manner without being excessively spicy nor oily in the process. Note to self: next time you come back in town, remember that they are cash only, that they open at 12 noon, and that they have some kind of little clams that looked delicious when I saw them at another table. Yum, this place is so good that I almost want to come back here for dinner.
