The Tori Karaage From YAYOI (Ken) in Singapore
I was rather shocked when they brought this to our table. One look at the batter and clearly it could not compare to Rang Mang Shokudo. Granted, this wasn't a dedicated karaage shop, and to their credit, these were still moist and tender inside. But the batter was like something that you'd fry fish and chips with, and the meat just didn't have the fat-laced depth that Rang Mang Shokudo has.
On a separate note, I'm rather bummed about Yayoiken's upgrade to YAYOI at the new PARCO Itadakimasu in Tanjong Pagar. I used to be able to get away with spending less than S$10 (US$6.90) by ordering the buta yakiniku teishoku there, but it doesn't seem to be on the menu anymore. The tsukemono on each table that I used to use to help shovel down extra bowls of rice with are also now gone. Sigh.
