
Yes, that's a big pile of garlic on the left side of that plate. There are slices of eggplant underneath, and it was tossed together with the minced meat and cilantro to the right of it before consuming. The garlic wasn't as pungent as it looked, although I don't think anyone wants to be near me right now either.
This is from a small chain of Hunan restaurants in Northern California called Easterly, and it was much better than I was expecting. We only had a few dishes, including a sliced fish called kouwei yupian. The oil that it sat in made for easy shoveling of rice, which they cooked pleasantly firm too.
Actually, the thing that I liked the most might not have even been a Hunan dish. Their meicai kourou was a succulently braised pork belly done with some savory pickled vegetables. It was awesome, with my weight gain tonight coming not from the meat, but from the extra bowl of rice that the oily pickles facilitated.
