La Casa del Abuelo in Madrid, Spain

Gambas al ajillo

The last time I was in Madrid was more than 20 years ago, and one of the most memorable places from that trip was this place...or at least the original little standing room-only shop. I'm not sure if they had already expanded to those nearby overflow rooms at that time, but this time we ended up around the corner at the 11 Calle de la Cruz location, which came complete with seating and menus. I was really worried about whether this place had become too touristy.

Gambas blanca a la plancha y pimientos de PadrĂ³n

Fortunately, their famous gambas al ajillo was right at the top of the list, and it was still awesome with those naturally sweet prawns and garlic (those little red chilies packed a punch too). We also grabbed those plancha-grilled white prawns above, which arguably were even better given how tender they were, with the shells even being marginally edible. One thing I forgot to get was their sweet wine, which apparently they are also famous for. That's not a problem though given how close these guys are to our hotel.
