Tasting Maldivian Mas Huni and Mas Riha

Clockwise from bottom: mas huni, mas riha, and yogurt

I'm not sure if these are proper renditions given that they were from a resort's mass catering, but I've been eager to try some local food here in the Maldives. It is fish-centric, and specifically tuna in many cases, like with these two breakfast items above.

The mas huni at the bottom right is chopped tuna and coconut mixed with onions and chili. It was milder than I thought it would be, but still nice to eat with the local flatbread. The other item is a tuna curry featuring a very thin yet refreshing gravy.

The resort here also did a kandu mas tartare, featuring raw tuna mixed with onions, lemongrass, and coconut oil. It was similarly mild (and I'm not sure how local it was), but one thing that wasn't mild here is their local githeyo mirus "hot chili," which tastes a lot like habanero. It was wonderfully potent.
