Sultan Kebab, Peace Centre

Iskender Kebab

I noticed this kebab shop (1 Sophia Road #01-15, 6338-8750) while passing by Selegie Road the other day, so I came by tonight to check it out. Their menu was very simple: just a sandwich, roll, rice platter, or iskender kebab using either beef or chicken on those rotating spit contraptions. They unfortunately had run out of beef already by the time I had arrived, so I had to settle for the chicken, of which I went for the iskender variety.

I've never been to Turkey before, so I don't have much to compare this to, but on its own merits, this thing was great: the tomato sauce was excitingly spicy while the cuts of chicken sat on buttered pieces of bread, all with yogurt for you to douse this in. I don't think it was that authentic based upon what I've read about iskender kebab, but it was good enough (and in part, small enough) for me to pop right back up to the counter for seconds. Unfortunately they sold their last bit of food just 30 seconds before I got there, and hence were finished for the night already.

It turns out that they open at 11 AM and just go until they sell out, which is around 8 or 8:30 PM. Too bad - this greasy spicy concoction would have been great after some drinks, and we could sure use another late night kebab shop around here.

I tried both their beef & chicken with my friends; we all agreed that the chicken tasted better than the beef. I thought that the beef tasted like it had some mutton in it, but I didn't ask the owners to check.

I have been to Turkey and tried the Iskender there. Iskender sauce never taste spicy to me. I have tried Sultan Kebab and I believe their spicy recipe "is tailored" to the local taste bud.

As in every country, the preferences for the food differs in Turkey too. Some regions prefer more spice than the others. I would think you would have been in the major cities of the west and tasted the Iskender there which is a right place to test and you would not find it spicy. However, if you have gone to south east or east Mediterranean of the Turkey then you will find the dishes a lot more spicier where the chef of the sultan kebab comes from. Therefore, i wouldn't think that he has tailored it to local taste. And the beef is beef and there is no mutton in it. However, beef has been marinated hence rosa might find it taste like there is little mutton in it.

This is the dirtiest place I have ever eaten at in Singapore. While I was waiting for my kebab, I seen a cockroach crawling around. Also beef is mixed with pork, so there is nothing halal about it. 3 months ago they almost got shut down when 4 people got a food poisoning. They use the chicken from the previous day and heat up for resale the next day. On a separate not both of the guys talk a lot of shit. I dont patronize them anymore. If you like real turkish food, just got to "Sofra" on beach road.
