Beef Fan-tastic at McDonald's Singapore
It's interesting to see a lot of the localization efforts that McDonald's does across the world. One promotion that McDonald's Singapore is running right now is the so-called Fan-tastic burgers, which is a play on the Chinese word for rice, or fan. Yup, you guessed it. That means that these are rice burgers...or at least, the buns are made of rice. It's clearly a shot at Japanese burger competitor Mos Burger, featuring "100% premium rice...toasted to give its signature light golden crust" and "the beef is lightly marinated with a special Asian sauce." Seeing as much as I hate Mos Burger, I should have known better than to try this. But, alas, curiosity prevailed.
And indeed, I disliked it as much as I dislike Mos Burger. Even though mine came out piping hot from the kitchen, the so called "toasted" rice was soggy, just like at Mos Burger (I was hoping for a crispy hash-brown-like thing like the pictures seem to show). The beef by itself wasn't bad, but something about this gyudon-like beef just doesn't sit right in Western food. Ugh. Fan-tastic? Only if you like Mos Burger. I shoulda ordered a Filet-O-Fish.
