Niman Ranch burgers

IMG_1184

My first experience with Niman Ranch meats was at a burger shop in the alleyway of SF's Financial District (I can't remember the name of the place anymore - this was about 5 years ago), and I recently found a shop at SFO's International Terminal, Burger Joint (just outside immigration, so you don't need a boarding pass to get in), that also carries Niman. (Actually, I think I recall that the MacArthur Park restaurants also carried them.)

Niman is a local SF Bay Area-based ranch that refuses to use hormones or antibiotics on their cows. The result is a very lean yet still very tasty burger. The leanness can potentially create a slightly dry patty (not as much fat or grease to ooze from it), but it's still tasty when grilled on a flame, and is certainly very healthy.

This is the real definition of a burger: start with top quality meat, and add fresh slices of tomato, onion, lettuce, and lots of mayo, mustard, and of course, thick fries. If you're headed out of the country via SFO, stop by the Burger Joint in the south end of the International Terminal.

If you're ever in the SF Financial District again, try Bistro Burger (across the Hyatt near 1 California Street).

Or even better, if you have more time, try Taylors in the Ferry Building in the Embarcadero (5 min walk from 1 California Street).

They both serve Niman Ranch burgers but Taylors is better.
