Ho Hung Kee (1946) Congee & Noodle Wantun Shop
Sigh. This Michelin-starred place came up during an online search for some good beef chow fun (500 Hennessy Road, Shop 1204, +852-2577-6028). But even before our food arrived, I looked inside the little tub of chili sauce on the table, and once again it was the sour pink stuff, not red chili seed oil. To be fair, the chili sauce was still pretty potent, and the beef turned out to be impressively tender. But the noodles didn't have any of that wok hei aroma that makes the dish special.
Fortunately, the rest of the items that we got were pretty good, like their liu sha bao, century egg congee, and even wonton min, which had some impressively aromatic shrimp inside. I'd still argue that the shrimp at Mak's on Wellington are marginally better, but it didn't matter that much. And if I understand it correctly, these guys are indirectly related to Mak's anyway...and directly related to Tasty Congee. I'd come back to this place, but I'll pass on the beef chow fun.
