Maruhide Uni Club in Torrance, CA
When I first heard about this place earlier this year, I immediately marked it down as something I had to go to the next time I was down south (2130 West Redondo Beach Boulevard, 310-323-2864), as these guys specialized in local sea urchins caught off the coast of Southern California. Cool - I knew exactly what was going to be my first destination after getting off of the plane at LAX today! (BTW, Virgin America and TSA Pre✓ still rock.)
I got that bowl at the top given that it featured three different types of uni: fresh, boiled, and marinated (not to mention a side of uni soup too). It was rich, savory, and sweet at the same time...I gobbled it all down in no time, and liked it so much that I wanted more. So I followed up with a black pepper-based pepperoncini pasta, which had a few pieces of uni on top that had been lightly seared with a blow torch. Man, how cool is this place?? I wanna come back to try more.

Looks so good! How much did it cost?
Less than US$20 for each of those
