They also had a special dry fried hor fun, which fortunately got a little better with a lot more taste, but it definitely still fell short of Hong Kong. This place is quite popular, but I just couldn't get with it.

The Ipoh horfun place was much better a long time ago, back when it was still house in a grotty kopitiam. Now it's just like any other foodcourt product.
I had the occassion to visit Ipoh on a business trip last year, and got to try the real thing. It's definitely much better, though it's still a relatively bland dish.
Try this one instead. It used to be at a coffee shop in Tanjong Pagar and it was great stuff. Haven't eaten there since they moved though: Lee Tong Kee Ipoh Sar Hor Fun 278 South Bridge Road Singapore 058827
erm.... the dry fried hor fun looks suspiciously like char kway teow, no?
