The House Chungdam in Tanjong Pagar, Singapore

Chadol Doenjang-jjigae

A piping hot bowl of soup today sounded fitting in today's damp weather, and this place was offering a range of bansang lunch sets that fit the bill (72 Duxton Road #01-01, 8336-2068). I went for that chadol doenjang-jjigae, which kept me warm.

Now, this place was upscale in terms of both the food and the decor. There was attention to detail in not just the banchan at the top of the tray above, but also a bite-sized serving of japchae featuring a potent hit of sesame oil as well as a thin sliver of deliciously fatty beef.

The upscale decor, on the other hand, worked against it. The brightly lit marble and steel theme felt like a laboratory and was emotionally cold enough that I wished that the place were more relaxed. That said, those counter-top grills at front of the restaurant looked interesting enough to go back for.
