My First Taste of Indonesian Jamu

Jamu

The hotel's breakfast spread included an impressive number of local items. There was even a nice lady manning a little table with a bunch of bottles on it. The sign said that this was jamu, a traditional medicine based on things like herbs, bark, seeds, leaves, fruit, and honey. She mixed me a small brown cocktail that I was very happy with. If I tasted it correctly, it was composed of tamarind and ginger, among other items.
