Patum Peperium: The Gentleman's Relish
I noticed these little chewing tobacco-like containers on the shelf at Meidi-Ya yesterday, and it got me curious. What the heck was a "gentleman's relish" made of spiced anchovies and "delicious on hot toast" since 1828? Well, it turned out to be a really salty anchovy paste, and was slightly reminiscent of Vegemite. The list of ingredients included stuff like butter and spices too, but I could hardly taste that. Honestly, it just tasted like ground up anchovies, perhaps mixed with a bit of flour for some body. I'd rather just eat straight anchovies, but this was interesting to try nonetheless.
