Lufthansa was
handing out sandwiches from a basket this morning. I chose the ham sandwich, which was a bit dry, but interestingly on bread whose texture was similar to
a pretzel. This snack on the intra-Europe leg sure beat those nasty meals they gave us on the long haul over here. And the economy class seats were much more comfortable too.

The bread you had is called "Laugenbrötchen" and indeed made the same way as a "Laugenbrezel" pretzel. The dough is dipped in alkaline water before baking, giving the crust a unique taste.
