Mingji Shouda Niurouwan in Shantou, China
The hotel concierge sent me on a bit of a wild goose chase for lunch today when I asked him about Shantou's beef hot pot specialty . After walking a good number of blocks, I was running out of time. So I stopped here (28 Changping Road, 8999-3896); even if it wasn't hot pot, at least it was local beef.
I had no idea what to order, so the guy gave me this rather delicious plate of stir-fried rice noodles with surprisingly tender cuts of beef (and a bit of the local sweet shacha sauce if I tasted it correctly). Those handmade beef balls on the side were a bore, as they were rather lean and tasteless, but the noodles were easily worth the 25 RMB (US$4) for the set.
