Red Star Restaurant on Chin Swee Road, Singapore
I'd been here once probably more than ten years ago (54 Chin Swee Road #07-23, 6532-5266), and I'm surprised that it's taken us so long to come back here again. It's a very old school Cantonese restaurant with a gigantic dining room, with dim sum carts roaming the floor and tea cups that are brought out to you in a metal bowl for warming/cleaning purposes. It's reminiscent of some places in Hong Kong...or even parts of the US, in fact.
Well, we really should come here more often: within minutes of sitting down, maybe four or five carts immediately surrounded our table offering piping hot dishes. And that's even before we had chopsticks or tea at our table yet. Now, the relatively thicker skin on the har gaw doesn't exactly make it Tim Ho Wan quality, but it's good enough. And it's even faster than eating at a hawker center. Note to self: they open at 8 AM on Saturdays and 7 AM on Sundays and public holidays.
