Bak Kwa for Chinese New Year in Singapore

Sliced Pork Bak Kwa

I bought a pile of bak kwa from Bee Cheng Hiang for Chinese New Year. This sliced pork version was thicker and tougher than I would have hoped for though, even if it still carried the aroma of grilled caramelized meat. Maybe next time I should get the minced pork version to see if it can be a bit more tender. I think it is slightly cheaper too, if I remember correctly.

I can remember when Bee Cheng Hiang had a branch near Times Square in Hong Kong. I used to go there on a regular basis to get some of this stuff for snacks but they closed up years ago and if they still have any branch in Hong Kong, I don't know where! But I still buy lots of this kind of stuff every time I go to Macau, have seen more than 2 dozen varieties there, everything from standard pork to kangaroo!

At Bee Cheng Hiang I usually get their coin shaped jerkies. So sweet, so delicious!

I used to get this very same one for years but the kids complained that it's too tough. This year I bought the minced pork one for a change and now they think the sliced one is better. I think so too.

I prefer Lim Chee Guan in Chinatown. Usually bring back several kilos after vacationing or business trips to Singapore.

yes bee cheng hiang slice pork is tough, the mince is softer. But Lim chee guan slice pork is super! Try the new branch at orchard ion, so high class for bah kua haha.

Lim Chee Guan Singapore's queue is just crazy every year. But not much of a choice. Just have to queue cos they make the best bak kwa in town.
