Ikoi Japanese Restaurant, Hotel Miramar

Sashimi

I had heard about this place a few times in passing (401 Havelock Road #01-01, 6887-3788), but had never actually eaten here, so we came by tonight to give it a shot as we were in the neighborhood anyway. It wasn't until we sat down did it occur to us that this place was running a buffet (crap!). That was not a good sign. Well, we were tight on time tonight, and if all those celebrities' photos were hanging on the wall, maybe it wasn't as bad as it looked.

YakitoriWishful thinking. Most of this was pretty lousy, be it the coarse tempura batter or the tough yakitori. The staff was kept wanting to push certain items on us (for instance, I wanted hiyayakko, but she kept trying to suggest agedashi tofu instead). To make things worse, they kept bringing so-called "complimentary" items (it's a buffet...how could it be complimentary?) that were largely vegetable or soup-based, suspiciously seeming to just want to fill our bellies with lower-cost food so that we wouldn't be as prone to ordering other items (and no, none of these tasted very good - we didn't even finish some of them).

To be fair, they were very generous with the sashimi, and while it wasn't anything special, it could have been much worse. I did like the crispiness of the sanma shioyaki, but being a buffet style, they cut one little piece off rather than giving the whole fish. Value for money? Sure, but as with most buffets, it was about quantity over quality, and this will definitely be one that I'd like to forget (it just reminded me of other bad Japanese food). So what was it that drew so many celebrities here then? I don't know. Maybe it was the a la carte menu. Hopefully those items are a lot better than this.

You took such a good picture, almost had us fooled here. I was almost ready to start reading what I thought would be another entry on good food. Haha. Oh well.

Yah, this place is quite well-known among the cost-conscious for their buffet...

I actually do like this place. I go there to fulfil my sashimi cravings because it is cheap and rather good. Can't get enough of their Swordfish Sashimi.

yah agree with everything, contradictorily.. --> one: famous place for jap buffet. ppl mention this place all the time. two: good food, like it. went there 1st time 3yrs ago i did enjoy my food very much. three: food sucks, nothing special, not worth the 40bucks. went there 2nd time last yr & its bad bad bad..1st time companion gave the thumbs down too.

verdict. --> one: go & try to judge urself. two: good for huge sashimi fans. three: nope i wont revisit

conclusion. --> standard drops perhaps?

hi, i was searching for other pple's entries on ikoi and came upon ur blog..
i was at ikoi a few days ago, and i disagree with the statment about it being that bad..
and the complimentary food.. thats only the starter, which is 3 thin slices of sashimi in a vinegar sauce, a hot pot, yeah it is a soup, but since it is "complimentary" there was no need for u to finish it.. and the pot soup was supposed to be a sorta appetizer..

perhaps it might be due to some misunderstanding with their staff or something.. the 1st time i went there, they couldnt get any of my orders right, until i realized that they all spoke mandarin.. then everything was much better...

but i have to admit, ur photo quality is really great ^^ u gotta tell me how u do it.. i use a camera phone.. so maybe thats y it izznt that good..

drop by my page sometimes ^^
