South City Kitchen, Atlanta

Buttermilk Fried Chicken - sorry for the crappy photo as it was really dark in there

Here's a rather trendy and popular place in Atlanta (1144 Crescent Ave, 404-873-7358). Since we were in the south, I was sure to try to order a number of southern specialities, including fried green tomatoes and fried chicken. Peculiarly, they also seemed rather proud to feature Maryland crab cakes (although I guess they also needed those blue crabs for their Old Charleston She-Crab Soup).

It all turned out fine. For some reason, this southern food rookie thought the fried green tomatoes would be small tomatoes fried whole, only to discover that these were sliced from a much larger one and then fried afterwards (with goat cheese inside, interestingly, presumably as part of this place's efforts to be a bit more upscale). The fried chicken turned out tasty, even if the (buttermilk-based) batter came out rather rock hard and salty. It was great having some biscuits, corn bread, and collared greens on the side too, despite how sweet they made the last item. And I suppose they did try to "southernize" the crab cakes via a Creole mustard aioli, while the she-crab soup was much spicier than I thought it would be.

Well, it's not often that I'm able to get Southern food, nor have I really spent much time eating it in the past, so any taster here is definitely appreciated.
