Al Forno East Coast

Pasticcio

Not to be confused with the completely independent Al Forno Trattoria on Thomson Road, this place (400 East Coast Road at Telok Kurau, 6348-8781) was suggested in a posting a while back for its home-made pasta. We were in the neighborhood today, and decided to stop by to check it out.

It turned out that most of the pasta here was not home-made, but rather just one dish: the pasticcio, otherwise more commonly known as lasagne. I figured out shortly afterwards that this was the appropriate item to get, seeing that "al forno" basically refers to food being baked in an oven. And I'm glad to say that this dish lived up to its name. While it didn't necessarily have that crispy baked top that I yearn for (and the edges here were over-scorched a bit black), the sauce was so rich and tasty that I eagerly ate this, despite the fact that I really wasn't even that hungry at the time.

Having to go all the way out there may discourage me from going back, but they did say that they were opening a more upscale shop in the Orchard area soon. That is probably just going to confuse people even more with the "other" Al Forno though...I wonder if they are still going to use that name.

I thought it was part of the same Al Forno's "family" the whole time!

I live in the east and this used to be our favourite little Italian corner when we didn't want to deal with downtown. But then we had this wretched experience there one weekend when the food was alright but the place was just noisy and unpleasant because it was full of screaming children running amok --- and we just never went back after that.

i like the one at thomson. It's more quaint and homely.

You should try Portobelle along Killiney Road. It's a tiny shop so you might miss it, but i think the pasta there is quite decent.
