Da Paolo La Terrazza

Insalata della CasaOne of my Italian colleagues tells me that Da Paolo is pretty good for Italian food. With that ringing endorsement in hand, I headed down there tonight (44 Jalan Merah Saga #01-56, Chip Bee Gardens, 6476-1332), especially since I had heard about it so many other times in the past too. Tagliolini PaoloIndeed, it lived up to all the buzz: the house salad started with huge strips of cheese and Belgian endives, while the home-made namesake tagliolini came out piping hot, exuding a creamy richness and full of tasty mushrooms and thus making for a very heavenly dish. Actually, this paled in comparison to another highlight of the meal: the outstanding service. The staff was refreshingly cheery, engaging, and very attentive without being annoying. I wish that other restaurants would learn from these guys. Penne alla GranchioThe only letdown was the penne alla granchio, which was not only undercooked (this was not homemade), but perhaps more importantly, just not as rich as Cantina's version. Unfortunately, that means the hand is still tipped in Cantina's favor for now. But I would come back to Da Paolo's for the tagiolini paolo. Apparently they've got a number of outlets in various forms around the island.

Try eating at Cafe Rosso in Holland V. It is opposite subway and even though they are almost always empty, the food there is good. I guess they don't really advertise but basically they are a japanese cafe. All their dishes have a japanese taste to them. The cakes are also very japanese like. The best is the Mont Blanc and are always almost out by the time I get there!
