Chicken Rice from Katong Shopping Centre

Chicken Rice

This was a good recommendation. Located in the so-called Katong Gourmet Centre in the basement of Katong Shopping Centre (#B1-85/87), these guys are apparently quite popular, seeing that nearly everyone sitting down in this area was eating their chicken rice, despite the presence of all sorts of other vendors around (and I'm pretty sure that it was their food rather than another stall selling chicken rice outside).

They did things just a little differently, with deep fried garlic bits, raw onions, and even red chili slices sprinkled on top of the chicken. But even without all of that (which would have just covered up the taste anyway), this guy's stuff cleared all of my basic requirements: the chicken had a hint of sesame oil on it without being sweet, the rice was flavorful without being mushy, and the soup was refreshing without being bland. In fact, the soup came filled with stewed wintermelon, carrots, and various chicken parts, not to mention cloves of garlic, which were mushy enough to be bak kut teh-like.

My only gripe was that all my pieces had bones in them (despite the signboard saying "boneless chicken rice"), but that was just a minor nuisance. Good recommendation either way...thanks!

Wow this brings back memories! If you ever in the east again, try the Ampang Niang Toufu down the street. The laksa that has a "369" signboard on it, (the front of the store faces the sidestreet) is pretty yummy too.

I remember this place. The chicken rice's one of the best I've tasted. You can actually request them to remove the bones. There's a lot of other nice chicken rice stalls around this area.

I have visited this stall upon the recommendations. Need to say that quality is OK but it is simply overpriced. The chicken portion is puny. You can enjoy better chicken rice, restaurant rather than foodcourt atmosphere (eg. boon tong kee nearby) and still pay less.
