Trying Out "Indian Ice Cream Mangoes"

Indian Ice Cream Mangoes

I came across these at Marine Terrace Market and Food Centre this past weekend. They didn't smell like mangoes, and they were shaped more like apples instead (they were firm too, despite the shopkeeper telling me that they were ripe). Either way, that little orange sticker got me curious, as the words "Indian Ice Cream Mango" suggested to me that it was rich, perhaps like a lovely alphonso.

It turned out to be nothing like an alphonso. It was much more one-dimensional, kinda like a Thai honey mango, and the flesh was yellowish like it too. Fortunately, it was sweet and tangy, not to mention generously meaty, and thus easy to eat. Yeah, I guess I liked it, but I'm still not sure where the "ice cream" part came in since it definitely wasn't rich nor milky.

They're called ice cream mangoes because you are supposed to put them in the freezer and then eat them with a spoon after it's frozen. The mango becomes creamy and smooth and tastes just like mango ice cream.
