Exploring Toa Payoh Lorong 8 Market

Mee Hoon Kway

When we drove past this hawker centre this morning, I saw a huge line in front of one of the stalls facing the street (210 Toa Payoh Lorong 8), but I had no idea what it was for. We needed lunch soon afterwards anyway though, so I suggested going back to the hawker center to see if there were anything good there. The only stall that really seemed to be packing it in was #01-05, so I got in line. I wasn't sure what it was, but the pictures of the noodles on the overhead signboard looked good at least.

Bak Chor Mee

The funny thing is that it was only after at least ten minutes of standing in line did I realize that it was just ban mian. Indeed, the dude had a big clump of dough that he was tearing at by hand as it went into the boiling water. I liked this place better than the one that I went to earlier this month, as the dough was chewier and more generously torn. Alas, it wasn't that generous though; I still had to get that bowl of bak chor mee from #01-44 above just to make myself full.

Titbits, anyone?

And this last bit of Engrish was something that I saw at a provision shop on our way out. Yes, the man child inside of me couldn't help but snicker at how they spelled it. Well, if you're wondering, it was just some preserved Chinese plums. I was hoping that maybe this shop would have some mo far kor, but I couldn't find any, and thus settled on these salty sour things as a proxy for it.

That was the actual original spelling of the term: as to what its etymology is, I hesitate to venture a guess.
