1827, The Arts House, Singapore

Billed as Thai food at the old Parliament building, the food was actually pretty tasty: starting with the home-cured salmon with spicy pomelo salad with lemon and coriander, we then moved on to the chicken coconut cream soup with galangal.

The main courses were the 1827 signature grilled chicken with herbs, tomato, and cucumber served with Jasmine steamed rice, as well as the roasted rack of lamb with shallot and holly basil and tamarind sauce. This was finally closed off with the pandan tiramisu with sesame seed biscuit and banana-cinnamon fritter with ice cream and gula melaka. The chicken in particular was surprisingly tender and tasty, and the banana fritter and ice cream was rich but with only a light sweet taste. In fact, almost everything was pretty good - it was more of a Thai fusion than anything, but still good. Food-wise, my only gripe was that the salmon was of pretty low quality, considering the poor texture and taste of it. Maybe they were trying to save a few bucks.

Beyond this though, Oh God were the portions small and the service slower than a snail's pace. The service was so slow that I worry that the only reason I thought the food was good was because I was SO DARNED HUNGRY! We came for a private event, but I'm not coming back for a normal night until someone tells me that the service and portions have improved. Now I have to find somewhere else to eat in order to get full.
